How does Mammoet improve safety around mobile cranes in complex working environments where people and machinery constantly operate side by side?

Challenge

Mammoet was looking for a complete solution that would give crane operators greater visibility while actively protecting bystanders. Not a standard product, but an integrated, tailor-made solution that meets Mammoet’s stringent safety standards.

Results

Together, Mammoet and Rietveld developed a unique safety solution that combines a 360° bird’s-eye-view camera system, detection sensors and RedLines projection. This gives operators complete all-round visibility, detects people and obstacles in time, and creates a clearly visible safety zone around the crane. Initial field tests have shown promising results.

About Mammoet

Mammoet is one of the world’s leading companies in heavy lifting and specialised transport. The company supports customers in sectors including energy, petrochemicals, offshore, infrastructure and construction with innovative solutions for moving and installing extremely heavy structures. Safety is one of the organisation’s key priorities.

The challenge

Mobile crane operators regularly work in busy environments where pedestrians, colleagues and vehicles move around the crane. Despite mirrors and cameras, blind spots remain, and it is impossible for operators to monitor every direction continuously.

Mammoet therefore wanted a solution that would not only support the operator, but also actively improve the safety of everyone around the crane.

This requirement could not be met with a single standard product. Mammoet needed an integrated, tailor-made solution in which several safety technologies work together.

The solution

Engineers from Mammoet and Rietveld jointly developed an innovative safety solution combining three technologies:

  • EasyView 360° BirdView, providing complete visibility around the crane;
  • EasyDetect 360° detection sensors, which detect people and obstacles within a configurable safety zone;
  • RedLines, which project a clearly visible red safety boundary around the crane.

When someone enters the safety zone, the operator immediately receives both a visual and an audible warning. At the same time, the red light projection makes bystanders aware of the safe distance they should maintain from the crane.

“When Mammoet approached us with its safety challenge, we worked together to develop a unique solution for crane safety.”
Frank Kanters – Account Manager at Rietveld

The results

Combining three integrated safety systems gives operators significantly greater visibility and situational awareness.

The BirdView system displays both a real-time overhead view and camera images of the area around the crane. The detection sensors issue an immediate warning when people or objects come too close, while RedLines clearly indicate the area that bystanders must remain outside.

This creates an additional layer of safety that helps prevent accidents and damage while increasing operator confidence. The initial tests were successful and now provide the basis for a wider rollout.

“The initial results were so successful that we now equip cranes with these solutions every week. Together with Rietveld, we continue to develop the technology.”
Ferdi Kivanc – Mammoet

Developing the solution together with Rietveld

For Mammoet, this was not a standard implementation.

The specific safety requirements called for a tailor-made approach and close collaboration between the engineers of both organisations. By intelligently combining existing technologies, they created a solution that had never previously been implemented in this way.

This joint development enabled the partners to deliver an innovative safety solution within a short timeframe.

“Despite the tight deadlines, every deadline was met.”

Relevance to the sector

Mammoet’s challenges are familiar to organisations working with mobile cranes, heavy machinery, terminals, ports and industrial installations.

Increasingly stringent safety standards require more than cameras or mirrors alone. Combining 360° visibility, detection technology and visual safety zones creates a comprehensive safety system that supports operators while actively protecting those around the machinery.

This approach helps organisations to:

  • prevent collisions;
  • reduce damage;
  • give operators greater confidence and comfort;
  • comply with increasingly stringent safety requirements;
  • further strengthen their safety culture.

“Together with Rietveld, we developed and implemented exactly the systems we were looking for.”

Conclusion

The partnership between Mammoet and Rietveld demonstrates that complex safety challenges require tailor-made solutions.

By intelligently combining multiple technologies, the partners developed an innovative solution that provides better protection for both the operator and the surrounding area. The project highlights how collaboration between an end user and a technology partner can lead to safer working practices and establish new standards within the sector.
