Effective climate control when no factory-fitted system is available.

When purchasing new Volvo FH Aero trucks, Collewijn Group encountered a technical challenge: the low cab with air suspension meant that a factory-fitted parking air-conditioning system was not an option. The challenge was to find a compact, quiet and high-quality climate solution without compromising safety or cab functionality.

Results

Together with Rietveld, Collewijn selected the Piccolo Splitter parking air-conditioning system. Its compact design allowed the system to be seamlessly integrated into the cab, while the roof hatch remained fully accessible as an emergency exit. Drivers benefit from greater comfort and better-quality sleep during their rest periods without having to leave the engine idling.

About Collewijn

Collewijn Groep is a leading Dutch family-owned company specialising in vehicle recovery, roadside assistance, car transport and specialised vehicle transport. Based in Utrecht, the company operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, serving emergency assistance centres, insurers, leasing companies, government organisations and corporate customers. With almost 50 years of experience, a modern fleet and approximately 50 employees, Collewijn continuously invests in innovation, quality and safety to provide its customers with a fast and professional service.

The challenge

Collewijn invested in new Volvo FH trucks. Due to the specific vehicle configuration, with a low cab and air suspension, the standard factory-fitted parking air-conditioning system could not be installed.

At the same time, Collewijn wanted to provide its drivers with a comfortable environment in which to rest. After all, good-quality sleep and a pleasant cab temperature contribute to both driver well-being and road safety.

Collewijn therefore needed a compact parking air-conditioning system that would not take up space above or behind the cab and could be easily integrated into the vehicles.

The solution

Rietveld recommended the Piccolo Splitter, a split parking air-conditioning system with a compressor installed beneath the cab. This keeps the roof clear and ensures that the roof hatch remains fully accessible as an emergency exit.

The installation was carried out in collaboration with Rietveld, ensuring that all vehicles were ready before the summer.

The Piccolo Splitter offers:

  • a compact design with no loss of space;
  • exceptionally quiet operation thanks to vibration damping;
  • an unobstructed roof hatch for greater safety;
  • operation via a control panel or remote control;
  • compatibility with various truck brands.

“We considered the Piccolo Splitter to be the best recommendation for a practical, high-quality solution that allows our truck drivers to rest comfortably.”
Harry Collewijn

The results

With the Piccolo Splitter, the new Volvo trucks now have a comfortable climate solution that is perfectly suited to their specific vehicle configuration.

During rest periods, drivers can enjoy a pleasant cab temperature without leaving the engine running. This improves comfort, reduces noise and contributes to better-quality sleep.

The cab also remains fully functional, as the roof hatch can still be used as an emergency exit.

Working together with Rietveld

For Collewijn, the partnership was not simply about supplying a product, but primarily about finding the right technical solution.

Drawing on Rietveld’s extensive experience in mobile climate control, Collewijn selected a parking air-conditioning system that precisely matched the vehicles’ specific requirements. The installation was carefully planned and completed in collaboration with the vehicle dealers.

Relevance to the sector

Many transport companies face similar challenges. Modern trucks contain increasing amounts of technology, while the available space inside and around the cab remains limited.

A compact parking air-conditioning system provides an effective solution, particularly when:

  • a roof-mounted air-conditioning system will not fit;
  • the roof hatch must remain unobstructed;
  • drivers need to rest comfortably;
  • engine idling is undesirable;
  • sustainability and driver satisfaction are important priorities.

Conclusion

By choosing the Piccolo Splitter, Collewijn is investing not only in an innovative climate solution, but above all in the well-being of its drivers.

Thanks to its compact design, quiet operation and seamless integration, the fleet now has a solution that combines comfort, safety and ease of use. This underlines Collewijn’s commitment to being a responsible employer and providing high-quality vehicle equipment.
